Chapter 18
“Grandma, Grandma!” Stu yelled as he knocked on his grandmother’s front door. It was six in the morning, he was all dressed up to go to school and Grandma Bertha was snoring at her loudest as he called her name. “Grandma, Grandma!” Stu kept yelling. “Dad wants to talk to you!”
At some point she stopped snoring and after a couple of minutes opened the front door dressed in her jack-o’-lantern pajamas. “What’s going on, Stu?” she said, rubbing her eyes.
“Mum and Dad are watching the TV,” he explained. “The TV man says they arrested the killer.”
Without a word Grandma Bertha grabbed Stu by the hand, and together they ran inside the house. Lydia and Todd were sitting on the couch, staring at the reporter talking about the arrest of Damon Ford. “Watch this, Mum!” said Todd. “They caught him hidden in some hotel miles away from here.”
Grandma Bertha sat on the couch by their side, and Stu sat on her lap. “Let me hear,” she said.
The TV reporter was still talking. “According to the police,” he said, “the suspect for the murders of Joyce Chapman and Marion Takaneda was recognized by the clerk. He called the authorities as soon as Damon Ford, who gave a fake name, went to his room.”
Damon Ford’s face appeared on the screen as he was dragged by the policemen into the patrol car. Grandma Bertha frowned. He didn’t look the least bit like the picture she had drawn in her mind.
She was expecting a virile, strong-jawed character with a dangerous look in his eyes. The Damon Ford that appeared on the TV screen seemed pale and fragile by comparison.
“It can’t be him,” she whispered. No one seemed to hear it, and she didn’t repeat it.
Lydia seemed overwhelmed. “I can’t believe that man was behind our house,” she said. “And dragged the body of that poor girl into the alley.”
Todd turned the TV off with the remote as soon as the newscast changed subject. “It’s all over now,” he said. “With the kind of technology the police has nowadays, they can prove exactly how he did it. Everything is back into its place.” As that didn’t sound appropriate, he added, “I feel sorry for Terry and Millie, though. And for Julius and Les too. Nothing in this world can repair the loss they suffered.”
Lydia was staring at Grandma Bertha. “I guess he’s right,” she said, trying to smile. “The police will do their job now. Right, Grandma Bertha?”
“Right,” she said, turning around and walking away. “I’m going back to sleep now. Tell Sharon not to wake me up when she gets here.”
Lydia and Todd looked at each other with serious faces, knowing nothing was ever this simple. “Mum,” he said before she went away. “If you’re thinking of doing what I think you are . . .”
“I’m not bothering you any longer, son,” she said, standing by the door. “God knows I’ve brought enough distress to this family. You can relax. I’m not causing any more trouble.
